The drive to diversify the tourism product base and to present tourists with a wide range of products, activities, experiences and interactions is on, the Minister of Environment, Wildlife and Tourim told stakeholders recently. He said this includes acknowledging that various markets require different levels and types of experiences. His Ministry recognises and respects the important roles played by the government, private sector and local communities and as such will strive to ensure that the tourism sector is government led, private sector driven and that there is active participation by communities. The starting point is to have local communities benefit directly from the industry by being part of it, he said. “This could be achieved through a relationship where tourists enterprises encourage local communities participation by engaging in standing contracts on supply of local craft and artefacts to curio shops as well as local dancing groups to name but a few. I trust you are better placed to come up with more,” he told his audience.
