Khama, Molokomme and Mohohlo to Highlight Impact Of Diamond Beneficiation on Botswana’s Economy Three of Botswana's most influential women are scheduled to speak at a half day seminar exploring Botswana's Diamond beneficiation initiative on Wednesday March 12. De Beers Botswana CEO Sheila Khama, Botswana's Attorney General, Dr Athaliah Molokomme and Governor of the Bank of Botswana Linah K. Mohohlo are set to discuss the benefits of local diamond beneficiation at an event that is taking place at Chatham House in London on March 21, 2008. The trio will highlight the impact beneficiation is expected to have on Botswana's economy; they are also expected to address the opening of the Diamond Trading Company Botswana (DTCB), scheduled for March 18, 2008. "Botswana is set to have one of the world's largest and most sophisticated diamond sorting and valuing operations," according to the Chatham House’ website announcement of the event. "The creation of a new layer of diamond industry in Botswana is expected to give rise to other satellite industries including polishing and manufacturing."
"Together with ancillary services, such as finance/banking, security among others, it is anticipated that up to 3,000 jobs will be created by 2010." The workshop will be divided into two sessions entitled: 'How will the initiative work for Botswana?' and 'What can the region learn from the Botswana initiative?' The program will be chaired by Chatham House Africa Program head, Alex Vines. The diamond industry contributes 33 percent to Botswana's GDP. With the opening of the DTCB, the country is expected to house one of the world's largest diamond sorting and valuation sectors, which together with ancillary services and satellite industries is anticipated to generate up to 3,000 new jobs by 2010.
