 Kenyan Company Recruiting
The Botswana government has placed adverts in the Tanzanian media recruiting about 150 Science teachers and college tutors, with salary promises of between 14 and 24 million Shillings every year for the posts.
The Citizen newspaper of Tanzania reported that Botswana was also looking for about 30 engineers in various fields to fill positions within its public service with equally attractive earnings rising up to 36 million Shillings per year for successful candidates.
The paper reported that the salary packages will attract several qualified local teachers, especially within the public service, who are taking home monthly salaries of less than $400. “Botswana is offering about $1,000 a month for the teachers, among other benefits”.
According to the advertisement, the successful candidates would also be entitled to other expatriate benefits, including free furnished housing, free medical cover for the successful professionals and their families and free transport to and from their work stations.
A Nairobi, Kenya based company, Productivity Management Associates, is doing the recruitment on behalf of the Botswana government.
The Minister for Education and Skills Development, Mr Jacob Nkate confirmed the reports saying his Ministry was in the process of recruiting teachers from the Southern African region.
“We had some shortages of teachers, especially for subjects like physics, at the beginning of this year. Locally there was a shortage and we are in the process of recruiting teachers from the region,” said Nkate.  He would not be drawn into discussing further details.
For his part, Botswana Teachers Union (BTU) President Jephta Radebe said they were aware of the recruitment but expressed disappointment that “the employee can choose to recruit teachers outside the country while we have so many teachers who are roaming the streets and unemployed.”
Radibe is of the view that Botswana has enough teachers and “if the government is looking for teachers outside the country, the reason could be that it is looking for certain specialized areas.”
