It is critical that Botswana gets well known around the world to grow inbound and domestic tourism as well as to attract foreign direct investment, the Minister of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism told the Tourism Pitso recently. Minister Kitso Mokaila said since the 2007 PITSO, over and above the major annual international tourism fairs such as the WTM, JATA, ITB and INDABA, other opportunities such as the filming of the No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency movie had yielded very good results. Contractual agreements have been reached for the film to air in the United States of America following its successful launch in the United Kingdom. Filming of the remaining series has commenced in Botswana, creating employment and building up skills and creating an environment conducive to developing a filming industry in Botswana, he said. “I can also share with you that lots of effort to develop prime heritage sites in this country to a state and standard where they can be added onto our tourism circuits and routes, is on-going. This is but one of several initiatives to diversify the tourism product, develop tourism in other geographic locations in Botswana and increase length of stay by availing a new and so far untapped variety of activities to our current portfolio,” the Minister said. Botswana’s interest in sporting events such as the Toyota 1000 Botswana Kalahari Desert Race and the FIFA 2010 World Cup remains high, “and I am pleased to inform you that we have commenced the focused marketing phase of actually recruiting strategic overseas teams that may qualify to come and practice in Botswana. “I also wish to appreciate some of your own commendable initiatives in promotional events and corporate social responsibilities. I recently officiated at the 'Tour de Kruger' annual cycling event, which started at the Northern Tuli Game Reserve. This was indeed a big and well-organised event, the type that we can join hands with and support,” said Minister Mokaila. He concluded by extending his congratulations to the recent winners of the World Travel Awards announced in May this year at the INDABA where The Tuli Safari Lodge was voted the leading safari lodge in Botswana, the Gaborone Sun as the leading Hotel in Botswana and the Phakalane Golf Estate and Hotel Resort as the leading resort in Botswana. The African Travel and Tourism Association at the same time voted Kwando Safaris as the runner up in the best safari guiding team, Jack's Camp as the best ecologically sound operation and “our very own pristine Moremi Game Reserve as the best game reserve in Africa.”
