Political scientists and the private media are misleading the opposition parties by pushing the electoral reform agenda. Our electoral system is one of the best in the world and should be encouraged in other countries, both in the European Union (EU) and African Union (AU). This is the only system whereby the electorate have more power than the politicians, which is why there are house-to-house campaigns. In our system a councillor, an MP and a minister can be voted out by the electorate. Our system also allows individuals to stand for political office without party affiliation (independent candidates). Election of our President is similar to that of the United States of America (US). In the US a president is elected through an Electoral College vote not by a popular vote as it was the case between George W Bush and Al Gore, the Democrats never complained about the electoral system but instead they focused their energy on the electorate as to why they are better than the Republicans. In Botswana we have 57 constituencies of which each has one vote carried by an MP and political parties need 29 of these votes to elect their president. I think it is an insult to compare our system to that of South Africa where the electorate vote for political parties and put their fate in the hands of central committees of various political parties to choose councillors and MPs. There is no parliament in South Africa, it is just a club of political appointees who cannot question their masters that is why there are demonstrations for poor service delivery there.Botswana opposition parties should stop being bad losers and accept defeat by the mighty Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), they always waste time complaining about Electoral Reforms, Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), Botswana Television (Btv) and Radio Botswana (RB1 and RB2) instead of focusing on us the electorate. These guys are cowards; they forget that the power is in the hand of the voter not the system. There is still no alternative to the BDP. A e jeke DOMI...... By Bobby Molapo
