Men’s health (not the magazine) is hardly ever addressed and spoken about openly in our country. For most men, it is still not normal or is considered taboo for them to talk openly about their ailments. Well, all that is about to change thanks to Daisy R, a local health care and events management company. Knight of Men, which will be held on 28 November at the Botswana Craft in Gaborone at a cost of P300, is set to be a night of entertainment as well as health education on men’s issues. According to Lucia Molebatsi, the health events coordinator of Daisy R, the ‘knight of men’ concept came about after the realisation that men’s health issues need to be addressed and a health fare or wellness day just wouldn’t be enough to get the message across as effectively as an entertainment- packed night with a health twist to it. On the night there will be stalls and information from health organisations like Tebelopele, cancer association, diabetes association and Pathfinder International as well as top class entertainment and live performances by legendary South African muso Vusi Mahlasela, Capetonian Allou April and our very own Sedibeng Chorale Society. The first two hours of the show (from 5 – 7 pm) will be dedicated to the health awareness programme after which it will be all about music, mingling, interacting and having a good time. As for the choice of artists for the night, Lucia pointed out that they were looking for mature, laid back, mellow and catchy artists. “And Vusi, Allou and Sedibeng were the perfect choice. They are perfect because they appeal to audiences across the generations and are able to get the crowd to relax and just enjoy the night,” she said. I’m sure at this point the women are wondering why they should be at the event. Well, men are a part of our lives as our brothers, husbands, boyfriends, uncles etc, and according to Lucia this makes women an integral part of the night. “You could use the night to spoil the men in our lives, make them feel special or simply accompany them and learn about issues that affect them together so that in future we can be able to give them sound and informed advice,” says Lucia. There will also be lots of prizes and giveaways on the night, with men in the audience standing a chance to win first aid motor kit, vouchers from Ultimate Beauty Spa, an outing to Baratani lodge, a date with the Zebras players, autographed CDs as well as new and limited Phoetri Khona t-shirts.
