Where is Zebras? South Africa’s Mvela Golden League club, Bay United together with Premier League outfit, Platinum Stars, are lined up for friendly games against 2010 World Cup participants South Korea early next month. Despite being the neighbouring country to the World Cup hosts, Botswana has not been invited for friendly games ahead of the tournament expected to kick off in six months.
It is expected that countries that have qualified for the soccer spectacular could use SA’s neighbours such as Botswana to adjust to the weather conditions.
Japan came to play South Africa in a friendly game in November and flew back home. The 2002 World Cup co-hosts South Korea is likely to flyover Botswana to have a date with Zambia before heading to Finland and Latvia.
The 2010 World Cup was seen by some soccer analysts as a chance for the local senior national team to play top class teams from different regions worldwide. But analysts say the Zebras’ recent poor show has not helped the situation. Managers of World Cup bound teams want serious opposition; maybe our national team does not make the grade?
Local export, former Zebras coach and now Bay United head-coach David Bright could try a little bit of marketing for our team whichever best way he can.
Two Zebras’ players plying their trades with Bay, Noah Maposa and Pontsho Moloi are likely to get a chance to play the Asian team which is skippered by Manchester United winger Park Ji Sung. But according to reports from South Africa, they could be sidelined by injuries.
