BPP Goes to Conference PDF Print E-mail

 BY NCHIDZI SMARTS
The Botswana Peoples Party (BPP) will this weekend hold its annual delegates’ conference in Tonota. The conference will mostly focus on party and committee members who do not attend party activities and meetings.
The conference, whose theme will be, “Botswana Democracy Under Threat” will have a representative of the Movement for Democratic Change from Zimbabwe as guest speaker, though the names have yet been confirmed.
The party’s Secretary General, Edward Mpoloka, said they will use the conference to introduce and endorse new Central Committee members who were co-opted after a string of resignations last year. The new members were co-opted into the party after the last conference and this will be the opportunity to introduce them to the party. Among those who resigned from the Central Committee were Motlatsi Mbanga and Ramasu Mogatle, who defected to the Botswana National Front (BNF) after the party decided not to cooperate with other political parties.
The party will also welcome Vice- President Neo Motlhabane and additional member Kumbulani William.
Mpoloka said they have noted with concern that some of the new members who were co-opted into the party had not attended the central committee meetings that were called in the past. “It is a source of concern that members remain inactive and do not offer any explanations as to why they do not attend party affairs. We have had three or so meetings but they have not attended a single meeting. At the conference they will have the option to decline the positions and not be compelled to give reasons why they should not be accepted or accept the positions and responsibilities that go with it,” Mpoloka said.
He added that they will remain steadfast in their resolution not to cooperate with other political parties in the next general elections. “We will not be initiating any discussions as we have previously said we will not discuss anything until after the 2009 elections.”
