Walking 2000km For Charity PDF Print E-mail

27 year old Mooketsi Ras Serunya has set out on a 2000 km sponsored walk around the country to raise money for the construction of a day care centre in Mahalapye. The man, who is also the vice-secretary of Botalathoma ward VDC, was compelled to take up the challenge after noticing a dire need for finance to construct the school in his ward.
Serunya and his team of five left Mahalapye on the 20th of July and will see their journey take them through 13 districts and expected to arrive back in Mahalapye on the 29th of August, exactly 40 days after setting out on their mission.
This week the team left Nata for Maun and will rest for three days, 13 days after leaving Mahalapye, before heading for Ghanzi.
Botswana Gazette caught up with Serunya before he left Francistown and he said their greatest need in the ward is a day care centre. He explained that he knows the government has no obligation to build them a day care centre and  therefore took up the challenge to raise funds for the ward village development committee. “We need around P300 000 for construction alone so we thought we should spread our need across the country. This is a way of trying to raise funds and meeting the pillars of Vision 2016 to have an educated nation,” Serunya said.
He also explained that besides trying to raise money he took up the challenge after noticing that the spirit of volunteerism was fading in our society. He said, “This is also a personal quest for me because I am trying to revive the character of self reliance to meet our needs.”
Despite missing home, the man has promised to complete the challenge he set out to do. This is also despite the fact that after starting off with 18 people who pledged to walk with him, the number has now been reduced to only five.
For now, Serunya prays that the strain that he feels on his soles as he walks does not deter his ambition and that his cause will be recognized and justly rewarded.
