Botswana Athletics Association has prudently spent the P158000 sponsorship from Debswana this year to stage three amazing events. BAA president Moses Bantsi said they decided not only to stage the annual Debswana National Championships, which has been running for over ten years now, but this year also split the total sponsorship money from Debswana to stage the first sponsored national club championships. The third event the BAA staged was the award night this past weekend at Yarona Lodge in Gaborone. The awards event was well attended on a Friday that coincided with many corporate Christmas parties. And athletics awards was also graced by officials from the Botswana National Sports Council(BNSC), Botswana National Olympic Committee(BNOC), as well as other sports codes like chess, volleyball, and karate. BAA president Bantsi described the year 2007 as their best year in history in terms of athletes, and clubs performance. He also paid tribute to young Pako Seribe who he said mid this year won bronze at Africa junior championships despite the fact that he finished his 200m race with a muscle pull. Bantsi said athletics stars' showing at the All Africa Games in Algeria this year, where they won six gold medals, made every Motswana proud. Bantsi said in terms of women empowerment BAA athlete Amantle Montsho became the first woman to bring home a gold medal from the All Africa Games this year. He said the woman has as a result qualified to compete at the world indoor championships in England next year, for the very first time. Bantsi hailed Debswana sponsorship of the last more than ten years saying it gives athletes the opportunity to prove themselves. He said through the national championships, the BAA select athletes for regional, continental and world championships. Bantsi said they will need Debswana athletics sponsorship to be able to select and send athletes to various international events lined up for next year. He said in April next year for instance they will need to send athletes to Ethiopia for the Africa Championships, as well as to the Olympics in China. He said they are compelled to send a team to the regional championships in Zambia early next year, as well as five athletes to England for the world indoor championships. Bantsi said for the first time last year a BAA athlete, California Molefe won silver at the world indoors in Russia. He said there is also the world cross country in Spain coming next year, but regretted that the BAA's purse was depleted, further appealing to Debswana to keep on supporting the BAA in the future. Debswana group PR and corporate communications manager Esther Kanaimba was touched by the BAA's report and pledged to continue to push their case. "I will tell them (Debswana officials) that you have said a lot of beautiful things about Debswana and that we should consider increasing the sponsorship", she said. Kanaimba told the BAA gathering that Debswana provides this support to BAA and many others simply because it is a responsible corporate citizen. "One of our values is SHOW WE CARE, the essence of which is that the people whose lives we touch such as yourselves, matter deeply to us", Kanaimba said. She explained that it was in the view of Debswana's commitment to enriching the nation that the company developed a corporate social investment programme, to assist us in refocusing our support to deserving entities such as the BAA. "Debswana would like to create a legacy of prosperity, sustainability and empowerment for the people of Botswana. Our strategy is to deliver developmental benefits to our people through the support we give and in this regard, sports development has been identified as one of the areas for support through our CSI programme", continued Kanaimba. Kanaimba said through sport one can develop into a disciplined individual, who can earn a living as a professional athlete, especially in this era where jobs are scarce. Kanaimba said sports also serve to create role models and national icons. |

When Is Policy, Policy?
Government already has its ‘solution’ to the problem of moral degeneration… The issue is too complex to be left in the exclusive hands of Chiefs and the Clergy. I have always found the policy making process, not only in education but generally, a very intriguing exercise.
