DUNCAN KGANGKENNA The Botswana Football Association (BFA) First Division teams have reacted angrily to instructions from the mother body that they sign documents intended to reassure prospective sponsors that clubs “will abide by sponsorship terms”. Teams were made to sign the document, confirming that they agree with the conditions set by the sponsor. But clubs feel it was improper to ask them to make the undertaking when the sponsor is not there. Contacted for comment on why they had to circulate such documents, BFA public relations and marketing officer Phakamile Kraai said they had to ask the teams to sign up the rules and regulations to show to all potential sponsors that they have teams that will abide by the needs of the sponsors. “This is meant to show the sponsors that the teams will carry their needs where ever they play to give the sponsors the necessary mileage,” said Kraai. However, Kraai explained that the contract is not bidding as they are just doing so to show to sponsors that they have this number of teams that will abide by sponsors’ terms. He said the sponsors need mileage and they (BFA) have to prove to the sponsors that they have so many teams that will give back the mileage. He said almost all the teams have signed. But when contacted for comment, some club officials said they were not happy to sign the documents, arguing that it was wrong for the association to impose things that clubs do not know about. They say the terms and conditions should be made known to the clubs before asking them to sign otherwise “we might be signing for something which is far-fetched”. They further explained that they have been warned and threatened many times and the deadline postponed several times because they did not want to sign their rights away. Kraai said they expect all the teams to have submitted the agreements by the end of the week.
