Selolwane returns to Cape Town with Ajax PDF Print E-mail
Ajax Cape Town pulled off a major coup when they signed Botswana international captain Diphetogo "Dipsey" Selolwane just a few days after also adding the name of Sifiso Vilakazi to their playing personnel.
The signing of Selolwane has come as a complete shock to many people as the player has spent nearly seven months with Jomo Cosmos, for whom he signed from Santos when they did not extend his contract when it expired at the end of the 2006/07 season. In addition, he spent five months waiting for his South African citizenship documents while training with Cosmos.
He even featured in two friendly games for Cosmos and once his papers were processed by the Department of Home Affairs, it appeared like a forgone conclusion that he will now start playing catch-up in the red Cosmos jersey. But on Friday, Selolwane attached his signature on the dotted lines for Ajax, whose coach Craif Rosslee has not hidden his open admiration of the player.
"I frankly did not fancy going back to Cape Town," said Selolwane. "I had spent close to three years in that city, and not that there is anything wrong with Cape Town, but I needed a fresh challenge in Gauteng. However, I could not agree personal terms with Cosmos and we agreed to part ways. I will always remain grateful to Jomo for everything that he has done for me and for what I have learned from him.
"Moroka Swallows also approached me and I was on the verge of joining them when Ajax also came with an attractive offer. I spoke to my business manager and he negotiated my release from Cosmos. Jomo was not fussy about the whole thing and, like a gentleman, handed me my clearance certificate and I am thankful for that. Well, it seems like I would be spending a lot more time in Cape Town afterall."
Selolwane., who also received an offer from Vancouver in Canada, said he was excited about the Ajax challenge. He stressed that he was not joining the "Urban Warriors" to replace anybody as it has been reported in the media that he was replacing the departing Thembonkosi "Terror" Fanteni who is joining Maccabi Haifa in Israel, but was joining the team as an individual to contribute to the success of the team.
No doubt Rosslee is determined to continue on the success of their stunning first round where they finished the halfway stage of the Absa Premiership leading the chasing pack with 26 points after 15 games and having recorded some of the most impressive scores in the process.
They start the second round with a home fixture against second-positioned Free State Stars, from whom they signed Sifiso Vilakazi.SUPERSPORT.CO.ZA
