Molepolole Stadium Opened
The long awaited laying of an artificial turf at the Molepolole Sports Complex has been completed and the stadium officially handed to the Minister of Sports and Culture Gladys Kokorwe. Minister Kokorwe last week appreciated the efforts the world soccer governing body FIFA has been doing in developing football in Botswana. The opening of the stadium was a welcome development as it will help ease the plight of premier league which has a crippling shortage of stadiums. With the National Stadium in Gaborone closed for refurbishment, the Molepolole stadium is expected to come in handy. The artificial turf can withstand three games in a row. The lifespan of the turf is 10 years. There are rumours that the stadium might be used for first game under the Be Mobile sponsorship when the premier league resumes on November 29 after months in the doldrums.
Under -20 Set For SADC Games
The junior Under-20 national team is preparing for the up coming SADC Youth Games to be held in South Africa from November 29 to December 3.. The junior team will be going without their coach Oris Radipotsane who has since been relieved of his duties. The Botswana Football Association (BFA) is yet to name his replacement.
BNSC Unveils Master Plan
The Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) has announced its action plan that will see the acceleration of sports development across the codes. BNSC chiefs said they want key stakeholders like Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) and Department of Sports and Recreation (DSR) integrating their plans and systems to fully achieve their mandate of “seeing sport development dream becoming reality”. BNSC chairperson Daniel Tau assured that during his tenure his committee would be accountable to affiliates as they have a balanced committee to implement their plan of action. In the plan they want to develop leadership to so that sports leaders will have the right expertise in pursuit of excellence in their codes. Tau said leadership programmes need to be introduced. Programmes like sports managements and sports medicine were given as examples of the programmes to be offered. When asked how they are going to monitor the resource persons, he said they will have to come up with strategy to safeguard them from vanishing into thin air after training. The other thing that will be in place provided the affiliates endorse the idea will be the Financial Allocation Committee. He said though the tenure of office is only a year they have to make a plan that will work as a foundation. He said they are committed to seeing their entire plan implemented without much delay. The BNSC boss said Botswana lacks indoor sports facilities and there is need for sports halls to be built to cater for indoor games. His vice chairperson Nomsa Mbere said the will try by all means to resuscitate the Sports Voluntary Movement through their human resource committee, which will ensure sports volunteers are retained. The committee hopes to raise P3 million during its term.
Orange Golf Tourney On Golfers from across the country are expected to converge on Phakalane Golf Estates for the annual Orange Phakalane Classic. The tournament is one of the most prestigious events on the Botswana Golf Union (BGU) calendar. Participants will be divided into three categories - the championship division (golfers with a handicap less than nine), A division for participants with handicap between 10 -17; and B division (handicap 18 – 24). This will be a medal competition and the winner will be determined over 54 holes of play for the championship division and 36 holes for A and B divisions. Orange Botswana is the new sponsor and has full naming of the tournament, a spokesperson for the BGU said.
