DUNCAN KGANGKENNA

The coming of Be Mobile P15 million premier league sponsor ship might usher in some radical changes in the leadership of the Premier League Committee (PLC). It is reported that some premier league teams are lobbying for change in the composition of the premier league committee.
Seven of the 16-club premier league chairpersons form the committee. But concerned teams fear that given the huge prize money at stake (P1 million for the champions) the committee members would be inclined to favour their teams at the expense of others.
They suggest that the previous committee, which was headed by Booker Bannister, should be recalled to run the affairs of the league. “The committee will not favour their teams in arranging fixtures and eventually all will benefit from gate-takings,” observed one chairperson.
He further said the league would not be won on merit if certain teams were favoured over others. He said they would soon table the idea before the current committee.
The uncompromising chairperson said all teams in the premier league are supposed to get equal treatment from management. He said there “will be more fights in the coming January transfer window because the committee will dictate terms and it will be difficult to recruit players from their respective teams”.
When asked why he thinks so when there are play rules and regulations, he said rules are not followed in Botswana they are only followed when officials are taking disciplinary action against teams they don’t like.
His colleague also maintained that there is something wrong with the adoption of Bosele Declaration, particularly the PLC. He said the all the premier league chairpersons should constitute the board of the league and a different committee be elected to run the daily operations of the league.
He said it would only be fair that way since the committee would be neutral and if proven incompetent, it can be called to order by the board. He said the current setup is not only cumbersome but suspect as well because the committee members are at the same status with the chairpersons that are not in the committee.
The new committee came to power in May this year after the famous Bosele Declaration, which stipulates that the league should be run by a board of directors.
