Mascom premier league 2007/2008 was expected to go for a break this week with Mochudi Center Chiefs comfortably holding the number one spot.
By AUBREY LUTE Their first scare for the Mochudi side came at the weekend when it was held to a 2-all draw by the defending Champions Ecco City Green. Thirteen games without a loss - Magosi have indeed had an outstanding start to the season. The journey is still long though, they should hope that come next they will continue to get referees like the one who officiated their match at the weekend to shield them from demolition. When it comes to sponsorship the club claims to have solicited millions, it is still to be substantiated though. At the moment is jus a rumour. The team has to be acknowledged for encouraging its supporters to go to matches and this has paid big with its gate takings in some cases surpassing the P100 000 mark. Another widely supported side, Township Rollers is still struggling to find top gear but it has done well in areas such as charity work. Rollers has also amassed a number of sponsorship deals despite its poor run. But the 1-0 win against Fighters at the weekend was a good close for Popa Popa; hopefully things will change for the better in 2008. Former Money Machine or Gaborone United made the worst blunder in 2007, firing a coach who was delivering and replacing him with a former player - who they only fired last week (after a short spell). GU became a shadow of itself soon after firing Luke Masomere. GU is one of the clubs that got lucky with sponsorships though, the club has connections, so to speak. Notwane has the political influence at the Botswana Football Association (BFA) offices, but it still has to complement that power with god displays on the field. The club is still to announce any “record” financing deals by far and it is struggling to find form. But with time things will shape up for the Toronto Boys. Of late Extension Gunners is playing good football. It must be noted that the club never experiences any problems at this stage of the league. Gunners fans can only hope that when the league draws to a close the team will not be fighting tooth and nail at the bottom. Things are promising for Mapantsula anyway. The most improve team would be Tasc, especially after acquiring the services of their new coach. Recovering from a poor season which saw them struggle to score more than a goal and failing to avoid defeat for eight consecutive games last season is remarkable. Fortunes have turned around at the Francistown based side. The team is winning and is in a good position (by their standards). Another Francistown side, Tafic is blowing hot and cold. Of late it is on cloud nine especially after that hard earned victory over rookies Boteti Young Fighters. The team is doing well so far to fight for mid-table position or avoiding relegation. Champions Ecco are fatigued, with the same players making the first eleven every week, things were destined to deteriorate at the meat boys. The club must find players who can help the current load when it gets overworked. When it comes to institutions Police XI is doing well, BDF XI is struggling, the army side cannot even find the back of the net, BMC is average, but note - it has not dropped standards, it is resting well where it belongs. On the other hand, Nico United is still to positively identify itself and place itself somewhere in the list of 16. They have upped their performance of late but would it be consistent? For the Premier League newcomers, Boteti Young Fighters and Mogoditshane Fighters, they have adapted well so far but it is tough for them. Both might find themselves avoiding relegation unless something drastic takes form next year.
