BY LEXIE UNAMI MOSES It is commendable how determined and committed our youth are in trying to get together to fight HIV and AIDS.Youth Against Aids (YAA), sponsored by Tebelopele celebrated their first birthday last Saturday at the University of Botswana Open Arena. True to youngster style, they had the best sound system blasting performances by DJ Star, P Master, DJ Lake and Kast who gave a exceptional thrilling performance. With expectations of a large attendance since 300 tickets had been sold, there were only a handful of people who attended the event. Nevertheless, that didn’t stop the few who attended from making the most of the show. Talking to the Sports Officer and organizers of the event, Gouta Tau , the Youth Against Aids program started last year August with a pilot project in schools. This program was is a joint effort by the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture and Tebelopele. “YAA aims to encourage young people to seek counseling based prevention as well as to know their HIV status. It is also meant to expose young people to information and choices regarding their lives,” stated Tau. She further went on to explain that the YAA program operates on 5 pillars: music, sport, fashion and art, education and career. For each pillar, support projects have been planned to ensure that youth are exposed to practical experiences that affect their decision making and lives. Talking to an audience member, Onalethata Kesebonye enthused, “I am very grateful for the services provided by YAA and I encourage the youth to join these programs. This will help in keeping them away from bad habits and negativity.”
